No matter how the State deals with its projected $68 billion deficit, it is important to minimize the impact on public education wherever possible. In the LAO’s report issued on December 7th, they outline possible scenarios that preserve Prop 98 funding levels that would keep intact core programs for students. However, they also outline worst-case scenarios that would cut school funding dramatically; these cuts would be the largest since The Great Recession if they come to fruition.
In all scenarios, it is very likely that public education funding will be cut to address at least part of the projected deficit; the question is a matter of how much. The Governor’s January Budget Proposal will bring a brief moment of clarity as he will outline his plan to address this deficit. From there until the May Revision though, it will be a budget brawl marathon. This leaves school districts in a precarious situation as it will be extremely difficult to predict how to budget for the upcoming 2024–25 school year.
Ultimately, budget advocacy will be more important than ever to minimize the impact this will have on students across the state.
